Snubbed by KBH

Vince Leibowitz reported from the TDP convention that the Dallas Women Lawyers Association has offered to sponsor a debate between Sen. Hutchison and Barbara Ann Radnofsky. BAR has accepted the offer, but KBH (as of last weekend) has not.

I’m feeling a little snubbed by Sen. Hutchison myself. Last month, I noted that KBH had signed on as a cosponsor of the “Marriage Protection Amendment,” but had not signed on as a cosponsor of the Voting Rights Act extension legislation (which has bipartisan support). A little over three weeks ago, I e-mailed the senator’s office (which, after perusing her website, seemed to be the preferred method of contact). I asked whether KBH supported the Voting Rights Act extension legislation (S. 2703), and I asked if the senator could provide a brief statement explaining why she felt the marriage amendment was worthy of cosponsoring. To date, I have not received a response.

Yesterday, I called Sen. Hutchison’s Washington office and explained the situation to the young lady who answered the telephone. I was placed on hold for a brief period then told that someone would have to call me back. I left my name and number, but have yet to receive a phone call.

Now, the truth is it won’t bother me too much if KBH’s office never responds to my inquiries. But I really do think the senator should respond to the aforementioned invitation to debate BAR. I can understand being a bit nervous. BAR is sincere and highly intelligent. She knows the issues, and she cares about the concerns of all people, not just the rich and powerful. (I would expect BAR to administer quite a drubbing.) The voters of Texas, however, deserve the opportunity to hear a debate. We have to evaluate the candidates. An honest discussion of the issues would certainly be helpful. Furthermore, Texans deserve a senator who won’t be afraid to defend her voting record and her positions. We’re waiting, Sen. Hutchison. You can get back to me later on that voting rights question.
